Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

Gamers interested in games in the flight genre, but who aren’t interested in the in-depth simulation aspects many of them include, don’t have many games to choose from. Luckily for those gamers, the one series they do have, Ace Combat, has a stellar track record of combining only a few simulation aspects with an emphasis on arcade-like gameplay. The latest game in the series is Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, coming soon for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon seems to add just enough new elements while maintaining what has made the series popular for so many years; a winning combination for both new and old fans to the franchise.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Batman: Arkham Asylum, coming soon for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, focuses on the two aspects of the character that have made him a comic book icon for the past 40 years: a story that highlights the cerebral side of Batman and his abilities as a crime fighter. Paul Dini, who has brought his experience as a writer from Batman: The Animated Series, has crafted an all-new story that ties into the Batman mythos. When the inmates take over the asylum, Batman finds himself in a fight for his life against some of his worst enemies, including Killer Croc, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy and Joker.

Super Mario 3D Land

image description

by phnk

During the Nintendo 3DS’s first year at retail, Nintendo released quite a few titles for it; unfortunately, many of these titles were ports of previous games, such as Starfox 64 3D and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. However, Nintendo had an ace up its sleeve the whole time: Super Mario 3D Land, a brand new game featuring Nintendo’s most beloved mascot, Mario. Super Mario 3D Land is an all new adventure spanning 96 levels across 16 worlds, combining 3D graphics with 2D gameplay. In a typical Mario plotline, Bowser has once against kidnapped Princess Peach and it is once again up to Mario to rescue her.

Max Payne 3

image description

by phnk

First released in 2001, with a sequel in 2003, Max Payne was known for a few things: it’s use of noir, its use of bullet time and its overall story line and voice work. Despite being a successful series, and even receiving a Hollywood movie, Max Payne fans have been eagerly anticipating the third game in the series for quite some time. Rewarding their patience, Rockstar has unveiled Max Payne 3 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The third entry in the series capitalizes on the three strengths the franchise is known for, while being a good entry point for newcomers; Max Payne 3’s story is able to stand on its own without knowledge of the previous two games.

Dead or Alive 5

The fighting game genre has seen a renaissance in the last two years, with sequels to many popular fighting game franchises, such as Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Marvel Vs. Capcom, being released. It should be no surprise then that the Dead or Alive series, with its last console entry being Dead or Alive 4 in 2005, is returning with Dead or Alive 5. The fifth entry in the series, seeing release on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, brings the popular series to a new generation with updated graphics and a character roster featuring each character that has been in the series to date.

MechWarrior Online (Video)

The MechWarrior franchise, appearing on both the PC and Xbox throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s, was, at its core, about pitting large piloted machines called mechs in battle against each other. The MechWarrior games were known for being complex; weapons would overheat, customizing your mech was of the utmost importance and nearly every key or button was used to control your robotic behemoth of death. Due to legal issues, the MechWarrior series fell into obscurity, until now: the upcoming MechWarrior Online is a free-to-play action game set to launch on the PC. MechWarrior Online combines all the aspects fans have come to expect from the series with one major change; now, every mech you’re fighting against is piloted by a human instead of an artificial intelligence.

Assassins Creed III

After three games set in Europe, all starring Ezio Auditore, the Assassin’s Creed formula had started to become stale. While Assassin’s Creed II breathed new life into the franchise, catapulting it into star franchise status, and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood further further improved the gameplay, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations started to wane a bit. While Ezio was interesting and a great protagonist, gamers were eager for a change of pace and to experience a new protagonist, similar to when the franchise switched from Altair to Ezio in Assassin’s Creed to Assassin’s Creed II. Assassin’s Creed III, releasing on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, looks to be just what gamers wanted in this regard.

Resident Evil 6

image description

After Resident Evil 5, fans were unsure of what direction the next game could go in; Resident Evil 5 tied up many loose ends that existed since the first Resident Evil, providing finality to much of the series’ plot. While some fans expected a reboot of the series, Resident Evil 6 goes in the opposite direction by starting a new storyline with the same cast of characters. Series’ veterans Chris Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy return in what looks to be a new story arc for the Resident Evil series. When viruses start mutating the population in two different countries, it’s up to both characters to stop the virus and figure out who is spreading it. Fan favorite characters such as Sherry Birkin and Ashley Graham also return, giving all Resident Evil fans a reason to check Resident Evil 6 out when it releases on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Skullgirls

These days, fighting game fans have a lot of games to choose from: Super Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter X Tekken and Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 just to name a few. But while the fighting game genre is seeing an explosion in terms of popularity and new games, many of these games are sequels and not new properties. One game, Skullgirls, looks to change that. Releasing as a digital download on the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, Skullgirls is a completely new fighting game developed by Reverge Labs. Skullgirls is a 2D fighting game featuring eight female characters, all with their own unique moveset.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

image description

The Elder Scrolls series, developed by Bethesda, is a role-playing game series that has always emphasized freedom. You are free to travel wherever you want, do whatever you want and even kill anyone you want. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, coming soon for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, continues this trend in the series. Skyrim is set in the province of Skyrim, a cold, snowy place mostly inhabited by Nords: strong barbarians who live to fight. As Skyrim comes under attack by dragons, who have not been seen in centuries, it is up to you, the Dovahkiin, to stop this dragon invasion and bring peace back to the land of Skyrim.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

image description

by phnk

The Legend of Zelda series is one of Nintendo’s flagship series, having released more than 10 games across all of Nintendo’s systems. However, one could say the series was getting a bit formulaic, as the game always featured the same puzzles, combat and setting. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, releasing exclusively for the Nintendo Wii, looks to be just another typical Zelda game at first glance. However, when you dig a little deeper, you’ll see that Skyward Sword modernizes the series in a way no past Zelda game has done. In this story, Zelda and Link are residents of Skyloft, a city high in the clouds above Hyrule. Transportation is made possible by large birds, allowing you to fly from island to island. However, when Zelda disappears to the surface of Hyrule, Link is the only one with a chance of rescuing her.
