Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Picking up where Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 left off, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, releasing on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, is the final game in the Modern Warfare trilogy. Like past games, you control a number of protagonists; however, the main protagonist in the game is Yuri, who is part of a task force consisting of Soap and Captain Price. The hunt for Makarov, the main villain in Modern Warfare 2, continues in Modern Warfare 3. Everything in Modern Warfare 3’s story is doubled in intensity, including the content; like Modern Warfare 2, such content may be offensive but like the previous game the option to skip such content remains.

Dungeon Siege III

Even though Dungeon Siege has had two games in its series, many console fans will find themselves not knowing the name; this is due to the first two games being PC exclusive. However, when the series was sold to SquareEnix, who owned the series wasn’t the only thing that changed. With the newest release, Dungeon Siege III, the series will be available for the first time on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 along with the PC. Dungeon Siege III is an action role-playing game, along the lines of Diablo, even going so far as to use the same 3/4 perspective. However, Dungeon Siege III, now developed by Obsidian, does a few new things in an attempt to make it stand out from the crowd.

Dark Souls

PlayStation 3 exclusive action role-playing Demon’s Souls was known for one thing: its extreme level of difficulty. Death was inevitable from the very beginning of the game and every part of the game was designed to work against you at every level; booby traps, incredibly powerful bosses and environments that actively damaged you are only a small part of the Demon’s Souls experience. When From Software announced Dark Souls, the developers made the claim that they didn’t feel Demon’s souls was hard enough, so expect an even harder game with Dark Souls. It can be said that the developers definitely succeeded with their intention. In addition to the PlayStation 3, Dark Souls is also being released on the Xbox 360.

Mass Effect 3

Unlike Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 left the series on a bleak note. With care being given to avoid spoilers, it’s safe to say that things were not looking good for Shepard and her crew. In Mass Effect 3, releasing for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, the war for the galaxy’s survival has come home to Earth. After a pulse pounding action sequence, Shepard finds herself against an enemy more dangerous than any before it; to win, she must unite the races of the galaxy together. However, with many of the galaxy’s species hating each other, Shepard must help put to rest centuries worth of hatred and anger to ensure the survival of them all.

Dissidia 012: Duodecim

With any long running series featuring multiple protagonists and antagonists, one main question gets asked among fans: Who is stronger? Would this current hero beat this past villain? Who would win if these two heroes fought? Dissidia: Final Fantasy sought to answer this question; this PSP exclusive title pit past Final Fantasy heroes and villains against each other in a game set in the fighting genre. Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy, also a PSP exclusive title, takes this concept one step further by expanding the roster of fighters, the number of levels and including a brand new story mode. Test Drive Unlimited 2

Test Drive Unlimited, released in 2006, differentiated itself from other racing games by breaking free of the rigid structure of most games in the genre; you were free to roam an island in Hawaii and do as you wish, such as exploring and taking part in challenges or races. Test Drive Unlimited 2, soon available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, continues this formula again placing you back on Oahu. However, Test Drive Unlimited 2 goes a step further by also allowing you to race around Spain as well. Test Drive Unlimited 2 allows you to roam in both Spain and Hawaii exploring either location or taking part in races; you are free to do what you want, when you want, just like the previous game but now in an extra location.

Crysis 2

Right away, Crysis 2 offers something that the original Crysis never did: a version of the game playable on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in addition to the PC. However, this is not the only change that Crysis 2 making; while some elements of the original game were kept, new elements were also added. In terms of what is the same, the Nanosuit returns, allowing players to activate special abilities to aid in combat situations. For example, Maximum Armor allows you to take more damage before you die while Maximum Stealth allows you to become invisible. Also returning from the original Crysis is the open-ended gameplay; there are multiple ways to dispatch your enemies. Do you snipe them from far away, kill them one by one while you are invisible or use the environment to your advantage, crushing many enemies at once? The choice is yours to make.

Alan Wake

Alan Wake, releasing soon on the Xbox 360, looks to bring survival horror back to gaming by combining a dark, twisted narrative with fast paced combat against surmountable odds. The story and imagery in Alan Wake is been described as being reminiscent of Twin Peaks or a Stephen King novel. Alan, a professional writer, has taken a vacation in a small town to clear his head of writer’s block. From there, strange things happen in the town; residents become possessed by darkness and Alan’s wife is kidnapped. Over the course of a few days, Alan must find out who, or what, has kidnapped his wife and why while he fights for his life against unspeakable horrors.

Just Cause 2

The open-world sandbox genre is pretty crowded these days. You have titles like Grand Theft Auto dominating the urban portion of the genre and Infamous and Prototype dominating the more fantasy aspects of the genre. To stand out, you have to provide something special, and Just Cause 2, available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, does just that. Set on the island of Panay, protagonist Rico Rodriguez returns with one objective: liberate the island of Panay from its dictator by causing chaos. Whether on a mission or just roaming the island of Panay, Just Cause 2 places an emphasis on explosions; the bigger they are, the better for you.

God of War III

In the past two God of War games, Kratos has taken revenge on Ares, been elevated to the position of god of war (and removed from it), has been killed numerous times, crawling out of Hades each time and has been betrayed by Zeus. With this final act, Kratos has had enough being a mere plaything for the gods and has now challenged them head on in God of War III. This PlayStation 3 exclusive title sees Kratos fighting the many gods who have played major roles in the series: Poseidon, Hades and even Zeus himself will come face to face with Kratos’ rage. God of War III is the final chapter in the God of War trilogy, with Kratos’ story finally coming to an end. For new players, it is advised to play the first two games before the third; this game immediately picks up where God of War II ended.

Assassin’s Creed II

Assassin’s Creed II is taking the concept of change to its extreme by introducing a new protagonist, Ezio Auditore, replacing previous protagonist Altair. Unlike Altair, who already started out as an assassin,  Assassin’s Creed II allows you to relive large parts of Ezio’s life: focusing on the time he spent with his family, chronicling his journey towards becoming an assassin and taking his revenge on the individuals who have wronged him. In many ways, Assassin’s Creed II, soon to be released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, can be considered another start to the franchise thanks to the additional changes it is bringing along with Ezio.
