When StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty was released in 2010, it featured the Terran race in its story mode. This was due to developer Blizzard’s plan of releasing three StarCraft II games, with each game focusing on one race, to tell a stronger, more cohesive tale. True to their word, StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, releasing exclusively for the PC, does just that. In this game, the story focuses on the Zerg empire and Sarah Kerrigan, the previous queen of the Zerg, who is looking to retake her position as queen. Set after the events of Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm is a direct sequel; to fully comprehend the story, it is recommended that Wings of Liberty is played first.

Much like Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm features over twenty single player missions, all involving the Zerg. While many of these missions will be of the real-time strategy variety, Blizzard has promised many deviations to these missions, much like what players saw in Wings of Liberty. Heart of the Swarm also features a large number of computer generated cutscenes; fans of the StarCraft plot will not be disappointed in what is presented here.

Multiplayer, an integral part of the StarCraft experience, is not forgotten about. Much like Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm allows you to play as all three races in multiplayer games against human or computer opponents. Heart of the Swarm features only a few additions to multiplayer, such as new units for each race, along with some subtractions as a few units are removed from the game. While these may seem like small additions, any StarCraft II player can tell you that simply adding or removing a unit can make a large change in how the game is played.

StarCraft II: Hearts of the Swarm does not yet have a release date, but with voice recording already underway many expect it to be released at the end of 2012. Fans of the StarCraft franchise, both in single player and multiplayer, will enjoy what Heart of the Swarm adds to the franchise.
