These days, fighting game fans have a lot of games to choose from: Super Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter X Tekken and Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 just to name a few. But while the fighting game genre is seeing an explosion in terms of popularity and new games, many of these games are sequels and not new properties. One game, Skullgirls, looks to change that. Releasing as a digital download on the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, Skullgirls is a completely new fighting game developed by Reverge Labs. Skullgirls is a 2D fighting game featuring eight female characters, all with their own unique moveset.

Eight characters may not seem like very many, especially when most fighting games have rosters ranging from twenty to fifty characters. However, each fighter in Skullgirls is one hundred percent unique in looks and playstyle. For example, Cerebella attacks with a hat that has two muscle-bound arms attached to it while Parasoul uses her umbrella and gun for the majority of her attacks. All eight Skullgirls characters are not only unique in the game, but unique when compared to other fighting games; this allows it to stand out in a crowded field.

Skullgirls plays like many other fighting games, with each character having a wide variety of special attacks along with super moves: moves only available when your super meter is filled via attacking your opponent. Skullgirls also includes the Variable Tag System, allowing players to create teams ranging from one to three characters. The less characters on your team, the stronger each one is, and vice versa; the strategy in Skullgirls starts before the fighting even begins.

Skullgirls, like all fighting games released this generation, includes online multiplayer. Not only can you fight against local opponents such as your friends, but fighters from across the world, ensuring you’ll always have a fight waiting for you.

Skullgirls currently has no release date and is set to release sometime in 2012. However, with much of the work on the game already being completed, fans can look forward to Skullgirls sooner rather than later.
