After three games set in Europe, all starring Ezio Auditore, the Assassin’s Creed formula had started to become familiar. While Assassin’s Creed II breathed new life into the franchise, catapulting it into star franchise status, and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood further further improved the gameplay, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations started to wane a bit. While Ezio was interesting and a great protagonist, gamers were eager for a change of pace and to experience a new protagonist, similar to when the franchise switched from Altair to Ezio in Assassin’s Creed to Assassin’s Creed II. Assassin’s Creed III, releasing on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, looks to be just what gamers wanted in this regard.

Moving away from Italy and the Renaissance, Assassin’s Creed III is set during Colonial America during the time of the Revolutionary War. As Native American Ratohnhaké:ton, also known as Connor, you will team up with historical figures such as George Washington as you fight against the British army and your secretive Templar adversaries. Returning to the game is much of the present day cast of Assassin’s Creed II, including famed voice actor Nolan North reprising his role as Desmond Miles.

While not much has been revealed about the gameplay, Assassin’s Creed III will be using weapons based on the period; gone are the rapiers and spears fans have become accustomed to in the past three games and have been replaced with tomahawks and muskets.

In addition to a new setting, characters and weapons, Assassin’s Creed III is also using a new engine. Dubbed AnvilNext, this engine promises to deliver the best graphics seen in the series to date along with new artificial intelligence for your foes, making your job as an assassin that much more difficult. While details have not been revealed, multiplayer is also confirmed to be returning to the series.

Assassin’s Creed III is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases in 2012, and is set to release on October 30th, 2012 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
