During the Nintendo 3DS’s first year at retail, Nintendo released quite a few titles for it; unfortunately, many of these titles were ports of previous games, such as Starfox 64 3D and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. However, Nintendo had an ace up its sleeve the whole time: Super Mario 3D Land, a brand new game featuring Nintendo’s most beloved mascot, Mario. Super Mario 3D Land is an all new adventure spanning 96 levels across 16 worlds, combining 3D graphics with 2D gameplay. In a typical Mario plotline, Bowser has once against kidnapped Princess Peach and it is once again up to Mario to rescue her.

Super Mario 3D Land, like most Mario games, features a variety of new items to try out. Such items include the Boomerang Flower, which gives Mario the ability to throw boomerangs and the Propeller Box, which gives Mario the ability to jump much higher than usual. The fan favorite Tanooki Suit from Super Mario 3 returns featuring most of the abilities from that game: the ability to float in the air, turn into a statue and attack enemies with his tail. Unfortunately, Mario does not gain the ability to fly when wearing the Tanooki Suit, unlike Super Mario 3.

Additional items are available for players who are struggling with certain levels. After a certain number of deaths has been recorded on a single level, items like the P-Wing are made available; such items allow Mario to become invincible or skip to the end of a level. This feature allows Nintendo to make the game challenging for series’ veterans while allowing newcomers to skip levels that are too difficult.

Super Mario 3D Land, releasing on November 13th, 2011, is a perfect blend of nostalgia and newness. New players will fall in love with the Mario series while past gamers can expect to face one of their greatest challenges yet with the series, which makes Super Mario 3D Land a perfect recipe for Mario fans everywhere.
